What should you give for a housewarming?

Mug médaillon doré, portrait féminin art déco noir et or

A housewarming gift carries a constraint others do not: it has to fit into a home you have not seen yet, decorated by someone whose interior taste you do not know. That is why so many housewarming presents end up in a cupboard.

The small-format rule

The bigger the object, the more it imposes a decision. A large vase decides a corner of a room. A picture decides a wall. A lamp decides a lighting mood. Every time, you are making a choice on behalf of someone who has just taken control of their own space.

A small object, by contrast, slips in. It finds a place on a shelf, a worktop, a desk, and it bothers nobody if it ends up in a cupboard. Low risk, and the gesture stays whole.

The kitchen: the one area always open

When people move in, the kitchen is the room where something is always missing. The furniture has been bought, the crockery boxes got broken up during the move, and there are rarely two matching mugs left in good condition.

It is also the room least governed by a settled decorative intent: nobody has a « style » for their morning mug the way they have one for their sofa.

Three cases, three gifts

You barely know them

A colleague, a friend of a friend, a neighbour. Aim neutral and well made: an object that looks chosen, with no message, no humour, no stance.

Our Art & Gold Leaf collection exists for exactly these cases. The Gold Medallion mug and the Golden Sun mug are closer to small art deco paintings than to kitchenware: black, white and gold, no text, nothing that could clash with an interior already thought through.

You know them well

Here you can aim at the right sentence rather than the neutral object. Moving in is a turning point — often good news, sometimes a rebuild after a separation or a departure.

The « Small joys make great days » mug works well in that context: the line is about settling in and about everyday life, without overplaying it.

A couple moving in together

The reflex is to give a single object, « for the home ». That is a mistake: in a home that has just merged two lives, the shared object is precisely what there is too much of.

Give two distinct but matched objects instead: two mugs from the same graphic family, with different artwork or different handle colours. Each has their own, and the pair holds together. The Gold Foliage mug pairs well with the Gold Medallion: same series, same palette, two compositions.

What almost always misses

The scented candle. Scent is a deeply personal matter, and they will receive four of them the same evening.

The empty photo frame. It transfers the work: they have to find the photo, the wall and the nail.

The houseplant. Lovely in theory. In practice you have just handed a living thing to someone in the middle of a move.

The large decorative object. They will have to keep it out of politeness even if it matches nothing.

The expected budget

For a housewarming, the usual range runs from €15 to €40. Above that you create awkwardness: the person has just spent a lot on their home and does not want a symbolic debt on top.

If several of you are contributing, two or three well-chosen small objects beat one large group present: it leaves the person free to keep what suits them.

In short

  • Small format: the bigger the object, the more you decide in their place.
  • The kitchen is the one area where something is always missing.
  • Barely know them: neutral and well made, no text. Close: the right sentence.
  • For a couple, two matched objects beat one shared object.
  • Between €15 and €40; above that, the gift creates discomfort.
