What do you give someone who needs nothing?

Mug peint noir et or, citation « les petits bonheurs font les grands jours »

« Don’t get me anything, I have everything I need. » It is the sentence that stops the most people, and it is almost always a misunderstanding. The person is not asking for the absence of a gift: they are asking you not to give them one more useful object. Those are two very different things.

Why usefulness stops working

When someone already owns the essentials, the « it might come in handy » argument collapses. The useful gift becomes either a duplicate, or clutter, or a disguised suggestion — giving someone a desk organiser suggests a mess.

Four levers remain, and only one of them works every time.

1. The gift they would never buy themselves

Everyone keeps a short list of things judged « unreasonable »: too expensive for what they are, too frivolous, too self-indulgent. Nobody buys them, and everybody is glad to receive them.

Spotting them is simple: listen for the phrase « I do like it, but still… ». That is exactly where to aim.

2. The gift nobody else could give

This is the most powerful lever, and the only one that makes the price completely invisible. A specific photo, a date, a sentence only the two of you understand: the object becomes impossible to buy elsewhere, therefore impossible to compare.

A mug with a photo of the dog who is no longer around, the family house, the band’s first poster: nobody wonders what it cost. That is what our Custom collection is for — you send the artwork, we print it. The custom mug starts from a blank base, with several handle colours.

One precaution: supply a sharp, well-framed image. A blurred photo enlarged stays blurred on ceramic.

3. The gift that says something

When an object can no longer be useful, it can be a message. Not a lesson — an acknowledgement. The difference lies in the direction: « hang in there » is an instruction, « I know what you are going through » is a gift.

That is what our quote mugs aim at, in the Humour & Quotes collection. The « Small joys make great days » mug works well in that register: the line is simple and asks nothing of anyone.

4. The gift with a story

At equal budget, a rare object carries more weight than a permanently available one. This is not speculation — it is that the object becomes tellable. « There were only about thirty of them » is a sentence the person will repeat.

Our limited editions are never reissued, and our Art & Gold Leaf collection is closer to a small painting than to a kitchen item — the kind of gift that ends up on a shelf rather than in a cupboard.

Four gifts to avoid

The gift card. It solves your problem, not theirs. It says « I could not think of anything » with an amount printed on it.

The generic experience box. Three quarters expire unused. The person who « needs nothing » is often also the one with no time to book.

The imposed decorative object. Vase, frame, figurine: you are deciding what occupies a wall in someone else’s home. The failure rate is very high.

The upgraded duplicate. « She has one already, but this one is better »: you have just handed her something to throw away.

The question of amount

Counter-intuitive: for someone who already has everything, the expensive gift is often the worst received. It creates a debt and misses the target, since the person could have bought it themselves.

The comfortable range sits between €10 and €30, provided the object is right. A €12 mug with the right photo beats a €150 object chosen at random, and it is not even close.

In short

  • « I need nothing » means « not one more useful object », not « no gift ».
  • Personalisation is the safest lever: it makes the price invisible.
  • Acknowledge, do not motivate: « I know what you are going through » beats « hang in there ».
  • Avoid gift cards, generic boxes, imposed decor and upgraded duplicates.
  • Between €10 and €30, getting it right matters infinitely more than the amount.
