Most of our mugs aim to raise a smile. Part of the catalogue does something else: it carries an idea. Those designs deserve an explanation, because an object that takes a stand is not a neutral object — and it is not bought for the same reasons.
Why a mug rather than a poster
A poster is hung once and becomes invisible: the eye adapts and stops reading it. A mug does the opposite. You pick it up every morning, put it down, turn it around. The message comes back into view intermittently, which keeps it readable over time.
There is also the social dimension. A mug on a meeting table or in a shared kitchen is seen by others. It opens a conversation without its owner having to start one — a quiet way of speaking up, and precisely what many people are looking for.
Three registers, three intentions
The press cartoon
The oldest and most demanding register: saying in one image what an editorial would take a thousand words to say. Our Democracy – Social Media mug and our Teaching Music mug belong to that tradition. One questions what platforms are doing to public debate, the other the place left for arts education in schools.
The difficulty of a press cartoon on an object is that it has to stay readable without the context of a newspaper. The drawing must stand on its own.
The infographic
A colder register, and sometimes a more effective one: instead of an argument, a figure. Our True Price of a Litre mug breaks down what you actually pay at the pump. It does not express an opinion — it gives a breakdown and lets everyone draw their own.
It is the format that ages best, because it depends on a structure rather than on the news.
Critical thinking
Our Protect Yourself From Lies mug defends no camp. It is about method: verify, cross-check sources, be wary of what confirms a little too neatly what you already believed. It is the only one in the collection you could give to almost anyone.
Tributes, a case apart
These are not about opinion but about memory, and they are handled with particular reserve: no graphic effects, no wit.
Our Thank You To Farmers Too mug repairs an omission — that of the trades we mostly talk about once they stop. Our I Remember mug is an object of memory, issued as a limited run. These designs are gathered in the Tributes collection.
How we decide what to publish
Three criteria, applied before any graphic work begins.
The subject must fit in one image. If a written explanation is needed to understand it, the subject is not ready.
It must name nobody. We deal with mechanisms, structures, situations. Not individuals.
It must hold over time. A mug is used for years. A design tied to a two-week controversy would be out of date before it shipped.
Should you give a statement mug?
Let us be clear: it is the riskiest gift in the catalogue. It requires knowing the person’s convictions, not just their tastes. Given to someone who shares the idea, it lands better than any neutral object. Given blind, it creates awkwardness.
Our advice is simple: reserve it for someone you know already carries that subject. And avoid it as a workplace gift — we explain why in our article on giving a mug to a colleague.
