« Limited edition » has become a suspect claim. Too many shops use it to manufacture an urgency that does not exist, with counters that reset and stock that mysteriously replenishes. Here is how it works with us, and why.
What the term means here
A limited run, in our catalogue, means one precise and verifiable thing: the design will not be restocked. No second edition, no quiet reprint a few months later under another name. Once the stock is gone, the model leaves the catalogue.
We do not number the pieces and we do not display an on-screen counter. We prefer a simple rule we actually keep to a spectacular device.
Why we work this way
Because we print on demand, in small volumes
We are not a factory. Each design is sublimation-printed onto mugs bought in small batches. Restarting a run means reordering, recalibrating colours, redoing print tests — for a model whose commercial interest has already faded.
Because a catalogue needs to breathe
A catalogue that only grows becomes unreadable. New designs drown, old listings linger with visuals we would no longer produce the same way. Removing matters as much as adding.
Because some subjects should not be reprinted
This is especially true of our tributes, tied to a date or an event. Reissuing them indefinitely would turn an object of remembrance into permanent merchandise. That is not the role we give them.
What it changes for you, concretely
At equal budget, the object carries more weight
This is the only honest commercial argument for scarcity: a gift the recipient cannot rebuy in three clicks holds a different status from a permanent product. It matters most for a gift — less for a personal purchase.
Do not wait too long on a design you like
This is not an urgency formula: it is the mechanical consequence of the above. A model seen three months ago may be gone. Our No Rules mug belongs, for instance, to the « Défense d'afficher » poster series, which will not be continued once sold out.
You do not pay for the scarcity
An important point: our limited runs are at the same price as the rest of the catalogue. The limitation is not a pricing pretext, it follows from how we produce.
How we decide a design is limited
Three cases, one common criterion: we know from the outset that we will not replay this model.
Coherent graphic series, conceived as a set of a few pieces that answer each other — see the Posters & Graphic collection. Adding pieces afterwards would dilute the series.
Tributes and designs tied to a date. Their relevance is anchored in a moment.
Trials. Some designs are tests of artistic direction. If the register convinces us, it gives rise to a new family — not to a restock of the old one.
What we do not do
- No artificial counter that ticks down on its own.
- No « last pieces » banner displayed permanently.
- No reissue under a slightly different handle.
- No price premium justified by scarcity.
In short
- Limited run means: never restocked. That is all, and we keep to it.
- The reason is industrial, not marketing: we produce in small volumes.
- Same price as the rest of the catalogue.
- A design you like may disappear — without us turning that into an urgency pitch.
