What should you give an entrepreneur?

Mug Own The Board, cadeau pour entrepreneur

Giving something to someone who is building a company is trickier than it looks. They work enormous hours, already own the essentials, and are buried under « motivation » objects that end up at the back of a drawer. Here is what lands, and what misses every time.

The most common mistake: the gift that lectures

« Hustle » notebooks, « Rise and grind » posters, « Boss » mugs: these come from a good place and produce the opposite effect. They assume the person lacks motivation — when a founder usually has too much of it, not too little.

A message that praises effort therefore falls flat, and worse, it reads as condescending encouragement. What lands is what acknowledges: the step taken, the risk carried, the distance covered.

Three moments, three different gifts

The launch

The most fragile moment, and often the worst served. The person has not proved anything yet, not even to themselves. A gift celebrating success arrives too early and adds pressure.

Aim instead at acknowledging the leap: they left something safe. An object that marks the switch, without promising the outcome.

The first real contract

Here the register changes completely. Something measurable has happened, and this is when a bold gift works best. It is also the only moment when a nod to money and conquest lands as celebration rather than presumption.

The routine, years later

The most neglected case. After five years nobody celebrates anything any more, and that is often when weariness sets in. An everyday object sitting on the desk beats a company-anniversary gift forgotten the next day.

What actually works

The object visible on the desk

A founder spends their days at that desk, and receives people there. An object placed on it is seen by clients, partners, candidates in interviews. It works for them even when unused.

That is the logic behind our Business & Success collection. Our Own The Board mug commits fully to the register: a tycoon in a top hat, one foot on a small house, a crown sprayed in red. It is not a discreet object — that is exactly the point.

Personalisation

The decisive move for a partner or a close friend: the company name, the incorporation date, an internal phrase. Nobody else can give the same object, and the price becomes invisible.

Our Custom collection lets you start from artwork you supply — a logo, a photo of the first premises, a number that mattered.

The limited run

At equal budget, a limited run carries more weight than a permanently restocked product. It is an argument founders understand better than anyone, because it is their own: scarcity creates value. See our Limited Edition collection.

The budget question

Counter-intuitive but verifiable: the expensive gift is often the worst received. A founder in the launch phase watches every euro, and a visibly costly object puts them in symbolic debt. Between €10 and €30 you stay in the zone where the gift is a gesture, not a transaction.

Above that, better to switch to something useful to the business — and there, ask rather than guess.

Three gifts to avoid

The business book. They already have fifteen unread. And choosing it amounts to suggesting what they ought to learn.

The generic « desk » set. Matching desk pad, pen and card holder: the whole thing shouts « I had no idea what to get you ».

The productivity gadget. Pomodoro timer, organiser, premium app: these are methods, not gifts. You do not give someone a discipline.

In short

  • Acknowledge the distance covered; do not motivate someone who already is.
  • Match the moment: launch, first contract and routine call for different tones.
  • Favour the object visible on the desk — it works every day.
  • Stay between €10 and €30: beyond that, the gift creates debt.
